Bee Fortress "Foundation" for Langstroth Hives
By using the Bee Fortress Foundation dimensioned to fit the bottom board of a Langstroth beehive, it is altogether possible to prevent black bears from getting into the hive. This is easily done by criss-crossing two ratchet straps up and over the outer cover and anchoring both ends of the straps to the provided “weld-eyes” on the Foundation.
To prevent the whole assembly from being over-turned by Mr. or Mrs. Bear, four 2 X 8 X 10s overlap and fasten to the Floor of the Foundation through the bolt holes at each corner, in a tic-tac-toe grid fashion.
Otherwise, a concrete foundation can be made 3-feet deep, then the Floor is lagged to anchors through the corner holes.
Add four Corner Guards and two more ratchet straps, and a bear can’t bite into the corners of the frame boxes. Thereby, any Langstroth beehive can be made, at least, colony-proof, if not bear-proof.
Aside from bear-proofing, the Foundation also serves as a stainless-steel Moat to keep ants out and fresh water source. Plus, it is a 1-foot high Hive Stand.
